Me with the Easter Bunny (Early 90's)

When I was a kid, holidays were a big deal and Easter was no different! We’ve always decorated eggs!! TONS of them! Every year, Americans dye and decorate more than 180 million eggs during the Easter season. I remember being unable to contain my excitement while waiting for all of the eggs to cool down! And we always did Easter egg hunts! Even if it was just me and my little nephew. All my brothers and sisters were much older than me so nephews and cousins were all I had!

Although I never planned to have children so close together. I believe my girls are lucky to have each other! And I plan to carry on the Easter tradition with them just as I had! Well maybe a little different with all this new technology.

If you have an iPad, you should check out the new “Egg Decorator” app! You can design your prefect egg with the app and then dye a real egg to match it! Plus for every virtual egg “dyed” on the app, Heinz & PAAS will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation!

My daughters aren’t quite old enough to dye eggs on their own without a great deal of assistance so the app is great for my toddler. She really loves adding the stickers!

This year, PAAS has eight new decorating kits to help dress up those baskets, including this Go Wild kit, with trendy animal print patterns, and 3D Eggsplosion that allow you to view your designs in 3D!

Here’s a few tips and interesting facts you may not know about Egg Decorating:

  • To help make colors vivid and bright, add three tablespoons of Heinz® Distilled White Vinegar to the egg wash before dyeing the eggs.
  • Also, to help keep hard-cooked eggs from cracking, add two tablespoons of Heinz Distilled White Vinegar to the water before placing the eggs in the pot.
  • Hard-cooked, not hard-boiled. Although the cooking water must come to a full boil in this method, the pan is immediately removed from the heat so that the eggs cook gently in the hot water. This produces tender, not rubbery, eggs and minimizes cracking.
  • Hard-cooked eggs are easiest to peel right after cooling. Cooling causes the egg to contract slightly in the shell.
  • Storage time: In the shell, hard-cooked eggs can be refrigerated safely up to one week. Refrigerate in their original carton to prevent odor absorption. Once peeled, eggs should be eaten that day.
  • High altitude cooking: It’s almost impossible to hard-cook eggs above 10,000 feet.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Heinz and PAAS and received a Heinz Vinegar bottle, a PAAS Egg Dyeing Kit, and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.
