We’re only about 4 hours from Huntersville, North Carolina. It’s a beautiful little town right on Lake Norman. My husband had to go there for his job, and we spent the week checking out the town while he was working. Click here to see Part 1 first.

DAY 2:

We visited Historic Rural Hill. Rural Retreat, as it was first established, was the home of Major John and Violet Davidson. John Davidson served in the American Revolution and was one of the original signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.

It’s completely free and we had the whole place to ourselves. They have a reproduction of the type of home John and Violet first lived, the original plantation home ruins (that burned down), smoke house, ash house, well house, barn, chicken shed and granary. At the base of the hill rest the family members of Rural Hill in the Davidson family cemetery.Rural Retreat | Rural Hill

DAY 3:

Discovery Place Kids is rated as the #1 thing to do on TripAdvisor. We spent the entire day here. It’s a learning museum designed specifically for kids.

The exhibits are themed around a small town, which include the town hall, grocery store, auto shop, animal hospital, and emergency vehicles that allow children to learn through play.

DAY 4:

Historic Latta Plantation is inside the Latta Plantation Nature Reserve, the same place the Raptor Center and Equestrian Center are located.

Built in 1800, Latta Place was owned by James Latta, an immigrant from Northern Ireland. For just $5, we got to visit the museum, pet the farm animals, and take a tour inside the house itself, which is decorated exactly like it would’ve been in the 1800’s.

Day 5:

Friday was our last day in North Carolina. Before we headed home, I took my husband to see the Latta Plantation Nature Reserve. We visited the Nature Center again and walked the Buzzard Rock Trail to get a good view of the lake.
