The acid in the lime removes dead skin, tightens pores, and reduces bacteria naturally. Lemon is marvelous for brightening and evening out skin pigmentation, as well as fighting wrinkles because the Vitamin C stimulates collagen formation. And the coconut oil keeps your skin from drying out!

  • 1-2 fresh squeezed Lime
  • 1/2 fresh squeezed Lemon
  • 1 tbsp Brown Sugar

Combine ingredients in a bowl (optional: quickly chill in the fridge). Apply to face and let sit for 15-20 minutes.

The mixture is runny at first but as it dries it will become sticky. Rub the sticky mixture into your skin.

Lemon Balm Infused Coconut Oil

Lemon balm, also known as Melissa officinalis or balm mint, is a herb. I’m lucky enough to have some growing right in my backyard! It’s easy to grow, spreads quickly, and has a gentle lemon aroma.

Lemon Balm has been shown to improve mood and mental performance and reduce anxiety and improve sleep. You may have heard of lemon balm tea for ADHD or high blood pressure. It also has antibacterial properties and exceptionally high antioxidant activity.

I use this all over my skin and my husband mainly uses it for his face and lips to prevent and treat cold sores.

  • Coconut Oil
  • Fresh or dried Lemon Balm

Chop fresh lemon balm in a food processor. Put your coconut oil in a glass jar or container and add your chopped lemon balm. The more lemon balm you add, the stronger the scent will be.

Seal the lid and place in a sunny window for about two weeks. Shake the container daily. Then strain the lemon balm plant from the oil. Discard the plant and store your oil in a cool, dark, dry area.

star_pink_25pxDeep Moisturizing Hair Treatment

  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon grapefruit juice

Mix ingredients together. Massage into scalp. Leave the treatment on for about 20 minutes (or wrapped in a towel/shower cap overnight).

Finish it off with a good shampoo – I use Dr. Bronner’s – If you’re in touch with your hippie side, then surly this magical soap has crossed your groovy path.

You really only need a small amount. I would do this treatment a week before a big event, NOT the day before. I left ours overnight when I did it on me and my girls, it took two days to remove the greasy, non-bathed look, but I think I used a little too much. A little goes a long way.

DIY coconut oil recipes

Both of these are so super easy (only two ingredients) and will save you so much money!

star_pink_25pxMakeup Remover (and primer)

For the makeup remover, use 1/4 coconut oil and 3/4 water. I also use this as a makeup primer. It makes my skin really soft and it prevents my makeup from flaking up on my face while applying foundation.

star_pink_25pxHair Detangler (or heat protector)

Use about 2 tbsp coconut oil (sometimes more or less, depending on your bottle size) and fill the spray bottle the rest of the way up with water. I use this on wet hair after the shower, and on dry hair before flat ironing to reduce frizz and to give it some shine. Just be careful not to over do it. If your hair looks too greasy, try reducing the amount of coconut oil.

Please note: Even though I haven’t had any adverse affects while using these products, I am NOT a doctor. Each of these recipes can be altered to your preference, more or less of one ingredient to your liking. Please experiment on small sections of your skin before applying it all over your face, especially if you are prone to allergic reactions.
