I do believe I am obsessed with burlap. And subway art, most definitely!
I decided to do a rustic look for my Thanksgiving table this year! It’s very warm and natural and the burlap gives it that southern touch!
The flowers and adorable turkey and pumpkin containers came from ProFlowers. I love the pop of color from the flowers and the ambience of the candles really give off the welcoming mood.
I made this super simple and inexpensive burlap Thanksgiving table runner with my silhouette. I couldn’t wait to share it with you!
I want to make one for Christmas now! Heck maybe every holiday!
- First I cut out a stencil with my Silhouette Cameo. I cut (6) 12×12 stencils out of cardstock. Each one is similar but not exactly alike. I designed them in the Silhouette Studio using different font styles.
- Keep in mind the type of fonts you’re using. I tried to use fonts that were bold and didn’t have too many center pieces – like E instead of e. The lowercase ‘e’ has a center that isn’t connected to anything.
- For the letters that do have centers, I used tape to keep the them in place, before removing the stencil from my cutting mat.
- I used spray glue on my burlap to keep the stencil from moving around. For a temporary hold, spray your burlap and let it sit a minute before adding the stencil.
- Once the stencil is secured to the burlap you can remove the tape from your letter centers. The temporary glue will hold them in place. I used assorted stencil brushes and Americana acrylic paint (bc it was the cheapest) to paint on my letters. Thinner letters needed thinner brushes.
- Remove your stencil immediately. You don’t want it to dry on the burlap. Just be careful not to smudge any paint.
- To finish it off, I sprayed my runner with Scotchgard to protect it from any Thanksgiving spills. And I sewed a zig-zag stitch all the way around to keep it from fraying. You could use a no-sew Peel-n-Stick Fabric Fuse to hem the edges if you’re not fond of the sewing machine.
My table runner was about 14 inches wide because my cameo can cut up to 12 inches wide. Then that left me with an inch of wiggle room on each side of the stencil.
The candles were super super simple! And saved me a ton of money! I bought cheap white candles and used some leftover burlap from my table runner project to wrap them. I used a zig-zag stitch to keep the edges from unraveling but you could simply use a no-fray spray or nothing at all.
I used leftover strands of twine from my burlap to tie around the candles. You could use a colorful ribbon or even a pretty fabric flower instead of the twine.

Love the runner…what type of vinyl or stencil blank did you use when cutting your stencil?…Have been trying to decide what to do for my Thanksgiving tables…you’ve given me a great idea…especially for the kids table…Look forward to your reply…
Thank you,
Donna T.
The stencil was cut out of cardstock! I used 6 12×12 cardstock stencils total. I created the subway art myself using different fonts in the silhouette studio.
Your table looks so pretty! Thanks for the tutorial, I’m going to give it a try!
That Thanksgiving table runner turned out super cute! I’m so not crafty, but wish I were!
Love it! I painted on burlap for a project last year, but I used a vinyl stencil, I don’t know why I didn’t think to use cardstock and save my vinyl, duh!
I actually tried to use vinyl too! I thought it might be easier since it would stick right to the burlap but it turned out to be a big mess for me. I couldn’t transfer it without messing up the letters and centers. Plus it didn’t stay stuck to the burlap very good. Vinyl was definitely my first thought too though!
That looks amazing…please come and decorate for me. The painting looks great and the burlap on the candles is a great touch!
Thank you Krystyn! I totally use Pinterest for ALL my home decor ideas! I couldn’t wait to start decorating when we moved since we actually own this house and I can do ANYTHING I want without needing the landlords permission!
very pretty Thanksgiving tablescape. Loving the stenciled burlap
What a truly neat idea for a table runner. I thought the burlap would be hard to work with, but your instructions made it seem quite simple. I think I have found a craft project for the kiddos for Thanksgiving break. Thanks for the tips.

OH, I LOVE the burlap idea. I think I can get some tomorrow when I go shopping for our Thanksgiving meal!
Your fall tablescape is adorable! The flowers are so colorful and table runner is sweet! Wish I had a stencil cutter. That would make things like this so much easier to make! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
I’m so in love with your table runner. It turned out fantastic. My daughter is using a burlap table runner and I’m going to show her this, she has a cameo. The flowers and candles just add to the rustic fell of your table. Love it!

Oh, wow, I LOVE that. Unfortunately my toddler has stopped taking naps lately and I’m not sure it’s a project I could complete without her wanting to “help”. Maybe Daddy can take her out to play so I can give it a try!
