DIY Canvas Wall Art for Kids

I recently saw a similar technique on Pinterest where kids used painters tape to make random lines and designs, then they painted the canvas and pulled off the tape. I figured this would be a fun idea to do this with my girls but instead of painters tape, we used vinyl.

I bought a 12 x 12 canvas pack on clearance at Joann’s many months ago. I finally decided to put them to good use.

Supplies:

  • Canvas (12 x 12)
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Vinyl (or painters tape)
  • Silhouette CAMEO

First we picked out our design in Silhouette Studio. Natalie (age 4) chose a unicorn (of course), Haley (age 3) chose the elephant, and I did the owl.

(If you don’t have a Silhouette cutting machine, you could create shapes like stars with painters tape.)

I used my Silhouette machine to size and cut the shapes just under 12 x 12.

Once the excess vinyl is removed, you can place the vinyl on the canvas, making sure the edges are pressed down firmly.

The owl was the hardest due the intricate design, and clearly the unicorn was the easiest.

We started around the edge of the shape using a stencil brush and then we used a sponge wedge for the larger areas. Make sure to dab with your brush, not sweeping side to side. This will prevent bleeding under your vinyl.

Once it dries, carefully remove the vinyl.

And now you’ve got gorgeous custom wall art that your kids will be thrilled to hang in their room!
