If you watch Sprout I’m sure you’ve heard of My Live Butterfly Garden. They play the commercial about 100 times a day! I knew it was something Natalie would love so I decided to purchase one. It says ages 4yrs and up but Natalie (2yrs) really enjoyed it!
First you receive your kit which includes your pop up butterfly garden (the net cage thingy) and then you have to send off for your caterpillars.
The caterpillars come with their own food so you don’t need to feed them or even open the container for awhile!
They are kinda boring at first but they double in size every day!
Then after a week or so they begin to hang from the top and turn into little cocoons!
Once they are fully cocooned, you put them into the butterfly garden.
And in about 10 days, they begin to hatch!
We had one straggler that was slow on doing everything but eventually all 5 hatched!
After they hatch you are supposed to feed them sugar water on either paper towels/tissue or fresh flowers. Similar to morning dew.
We kept them inside for about 3 days and then released them. We had to wait on the straggler to hatch out first too.
Butterflies only live for 2-4 weeks so I like to set them free for their short life span. Although I’ve heard you can keep them in the butterfly garden and they will continue to have babies!
You can buy larger butterfly garden cages, even ones that are big enough to walk in! And there are other butterfly kits, not made by My Live Butterfly Garden, you can purchase as well.
Cool huh?!? Overall, it was a really fun and easy to do activity! Now I want to catch some caterpillars outside and try to hatch those out!
Disclaimer: I purchased this product with my OWN money! This was NOT a sponsored by My Live Butterfly Garden nor did I receive compensation.
how wonderful! I want it! DO they send those for review , I wonder 🙂
I was wondering that too? They probably did bu I’m not sure if they do anymore. They’re really not very expensive though…
Cool, my oldest daughter always says how she wants one of those when she sees the commercial. Might be worth buying once just for the experience. Both my 3 and 6 year old are always trying to catch a butterfly when they see them outside too so this would give them a chance to see them up close and personal. 🙂
Absolutely! You should totally get one. It’s really fun for the whole family! I got mine on amazon for about $15. Then I had to pay $5 for the shipping of the caterpillars
My son has been begging for one of these. They had one in their classroom last year and he “wants his own.” After reading your post, I might have to consider it. He might be your biggest fan after I tell him.
Stopped by from Thirsty for Comments….Have a sunshine filled day!
Haha Great! Thanks for stopping by!
That’s pretty cool. I wonder if they send different species to different regions.
I don’t know. I think they’re all the same. If it’s cold where you live, you’re supposed to keep them indoors.
