I’m getting a NEW camera!! My birthday is coming up on July 6th and even though I’d love an iPad2 I decided on a new camera. Plus I’ve already found someone to purchase my current camera. I currently own an Olympus E-520. It has been a great camera and I’ve learned a lot about manual shooting, but I’m ready for an upgrade!
Olympus E-520
- 10-megapixel CMOS sensor captures enough detail for photo-quality 18 x 24-inch prints
- Lightweight ergonomic design; kit includes 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Zuiko lens
- Enhanced in-body Image Stabilization with Supersonic Wave Drive technology
- Face Detection and Shadow Adjustment technologies; Perfect Shot Preview
I’ve always thought the Olympus brand was nice and I never thought I needed a Nikon or Canon to take amazing photos… and I still don’t! But it DOES make a difference.
I was able to borrow a Canon EOS Rebel T2i to test out. My husband has no idea what he’s doing and was able to take amazing photos! And although I CAN get those shots with my Olympus, the Canon seems much more user-friendly.
Canon EOS Rebel T2i
- 18.0 MP CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor for high image quality and speed.
- ISO 100 – 6400 for shooting from bright to dim light.
- Improved EOS Full HD Movie mode with manual exposure control, expanded recording with new Movie Digital zoom
- Vari-angle 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor (3:2) for shooting at high or low angles and 1,040,000-dot VGA with reflection reduction
- New Scene Intelligent Auto mode and Picture Style Auto incorporating the new EOS Scene Detection System
- 3.0-inch Vari-Angle Clear View LCD; Built-in flash; Full HD movie mode at 1920 x 1080 resolution
- And Video Snapshot features for enhanced video shooting options.
Here’s a few shots I took with the Olympus vs the Canon…
AND
Overall, after reading a ton of reviews. I think I may go with the Nikon D5100. I’ve heard some people love their Canon and some hate them, and I’m sure I’d be happy with a Canon BUT most everyone I talk to that owns a Nikon, LOVES it! Plus Nikon seems to be very durable and are obviously well known (for a good reason).
Nikon D5100
- 3-inch, 921,000-dot Super-Density horizontal type Vari-Angle LCD Monitor
- In-camera Special Effects Mode
- In-camera HDR (High Dynamic Range)
- Stunning Full 1080p HD Movies with Full Time Autofocus
- High Resolution 16.2 MP DX-format CMOS sensor
I love the vari-angle LCD monitor! It will really come handy especially for self portraits!
Take pictures or record movies from a unique viewpoint, the D5100’s 3.0 inch, super sharp, 921,000-dot Vari-angle LCD monitor allows for versatile high quality viewing and playback. Explore every angle, with overhead shots, waist level candids, ground level and fun self portraits; you will never miss a shot. This Vari-angle monitor allows you to be creative from any point of view.
I vote Nikon all the way!!
Glad to hear you say that! You take amazing photos! Is that what you have??
I’m trying to make the same decision! I’ve had a Canong EOS for film, but not the digital one, and I loved it. But I have heard good things about Nikon.
My husband took our camera to Europe this week and dropped it. So, I’m getting my wish for a new camera sooner than I thought!
Good luck deciding.
I prefer the Canon but that’s b/c that is what I have always used. My husband bought me a new lens for my birthday this year and I love it. I need to take more time to play around with my camera, though!
Thanks for stopping by! You should totally do a fitness challenge with me! I need some motivation!
What I would recommend is that you go pick both of them up and buy which one feels better in your hands. Both are equally really good cameras and you will take beautiful photos with both.
I personally LOVE my Sony DSLR (I switched over from a Minolta SLR a few years ago and wanted to be able to use my old lenses).
I’ve been looking at Sony’s too! For the price of a Nikon D5100 you can get a really nice Sony with lots of features!
I’ve heard tons of debate about this recently. I am a canon user and lover. The only qualm I have with it is focusing issues from time to time. But the results I get are phenomenal. I also recently heard a photographer say that oft times the best camera is the one we have with us. lol.
So true! Both cameras will take amazing photos, I think I need to pick the one that I am most comfortable with!
nikon user 🙂
I would totally recommend the CANON!! I have bought nothing but Canon camera’s ever since I was like 15 and my parents bought me a Nikon. Well, after taking some photos with it, it went right back to the store and they got me a CANON!! I have nothing but FANTASTIC photo’s and they are very durable! I have had a point & shoot for 7 years and it still works great!
I don’t have experience with these beyond all of the information you just gave me, but I will admit that I am a Nikon girl and would definitely give Nikon a vote! I would love to try more than just my Nikon point-and-shoot someday! Nikon is definitely durable in my experience!
how about a Sony, have you tried it?
My husband said I should look at them too. I haven’t actually tested one out yet.
I’m personally a Canon girl. I’m shooting with a XSi with a Tamron 28-70 lens. I love my camera, not that I wouldn’t love an upgrade, and like someone before me said – it’s really more about how you feel holding the camera than it is the actual body (at least when you’re comparing Canon to Nikon.) Both are wonderful cameras! I’ve just always preferred the ‘feel’ of the Canon.

I have a Nikon and I love it! Thank you for the comparison! Reciprocated the Stumble!
I’m planning to buy a camera too, according to survey Canon is best brand here in our country. But I guess I will also consider Nikon and study its features. Thanks for the post
Stumbled here, please stumble on my post http://www.lifeascending.info/attract-success-through-qoutes/
Those cameras look awesome. I just have a basic pocket one. I’d love one of those.
we have the nikon d40x and love it! we have always had canon but hubby is a store manager for a camera store & he feels this is a great camera…good luck deciding…
Canon! I have owned both Nikon & Canon SLR cameras and even point and shoot cameras in each brand. Let me tell you, Canon BLOWS Nikon AWAY! I now ONLY have Canon cameras and will NOT buy any other brand. Best Camera’s Out There, Canon!
