My youngest baby turned 4 years old today! It sure doesn’t seem like it’s been four whole years. We celebrated her 4th birthday this weekend with family and friends.
We throw a party every year, and I always bake a fun cake. This year, Haley chose a horse theme.
I found this marvelous rainbow petal cake idea on Pinterest that can be achieved with just a spoon. I originally planned to cover the entire cake with the same technique, but I ran out of frosting.
And honestly, I was too lazy to make more buttercream and try to match the pastel colors, so I just dumped a bottle of sprinkles on top. They matched perfectly. I got lucky!
The hanging decorations were also Pinterest inspired. I used balloon string to hang the photos from the ceiling. Each clothespin has two different photos so you can see a photo on each side.
The cake was three 9-inch round layers. I used Duncan Hines Dark Fudge Chocolate and Butter Yellow cake mixes, and I always substitute softened butter for oil.
The cake bunting was made out of patterned cardstock and paper straws just like Natalie’s Curious George cake.
And the horse cake topper was just a plastic toy I ordered from Amazon, although it was a bit too heavy for a cake topper.
The small horses on the table were bubbles for the kids. They came from Oriental Trading. And I made the purple horse cutouts with my Silhouette CAMEO.
I bought the Number 4 piñata kit on Amazon. I have bought this same kit a few times now.
They have lots of different numbers to choose from and it comes with the blindfold, the stick, and even the candy filler.
THE MENU:
- Burger/Hot Dog Bar
- Assorted Chips
- Fruit Salad (with sugar)
- Chocolate Dipped Marshmallows
- Apple Pops (covered in white chocolate)
- Mac & Cheese
- Birthday Cake Chex™ Snack Mix
- Strawberry Flavored Slushy Punch
We decided to go with a burger and hot dog bar, like we did at Haley’s Mickey Mouse birthday party. We had the guests add their own toppings – like cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, and chili.
The Birthday Cake Chex™ Snack Mix was also a big hit and super easy to make. I only wish I had used larger sprinkles or more of the smaller ones. The kids loved it regardless.
Chex™ Party Mix is great for literally any type of event, party, holiday or just to satisfy a weekend craving. Plus, a lot of recipes are gluten-free and most take 15 minutes or less to create.
