1. Decide on your theme:
You could do an Elegant Theme with white lights and neutral colors. Or a Modern Theme with non-traditional bright colors and metallics. Or something more Traditional like a Rustic-styled Theme with wood or stone and classic farmhouse patterns.
I like to think I decorate just like my mom always did. I like decorating with colorful lights and even those ugly old decorations I made way back in elementary school!
2. Use what you already have:
Over time you will build up a stockpile of decorations. Start with what you already have and then decide what you need to purchase to fill in. You can include your current long-term decor in this process.
I kept everything on my mantel and added in Christmas decorations to fill up the spaces. I purchased these square clear glass bowls for $1. They could be filled with small ornaments, berries, holiday potpourri, or fresh flowers…. which brings me to my next tip!
3. Use natural branches and fresh flowers:
Sticks are free! And they can be added to your regular decor to make it look Christmassy. Just quickly bake them in the oven to get rid of any bugs first. You can even add glitter, ribbon, berries and nuts to dress them up.
If you’re not the crafty type or too paranoid of bringing bugs in the house (like my mom), then just stick with some fresh Candy Cane Roses or a Ho! Ho! Ho! Trio of Trees!
4. Decorate with food:
Everyone loves decorations they can eat, right. I know I do! You can add yummy treats like chocolate covered strawberries and Oreo’s or gingerbread cookies to side tables which look amazing and also serve a purpose!
5. Don’t damage your house for decorating sake:
Before I owned my own home, I would stick a nail into anything to hang a stocking. Now I care a lot more about small things like that. Red Envelope has some new holiday stocking holders made from iron. They hold up to three pounds, they won’t damage your mantel, and they can be personalized!
Most importantly, you want your decor to reflect YOU! Have fun and don’t stress. You can always change it again next year!

I need those strawberries. I also need to get what I already have and get outside to decorate! I did inside but have been slacking out there!
I hear ya! I am planning to finish my decorating tomorrow… hopefully! BTW, your Supernatural Fantasy post was cracking me up. I didn’t get to read it all the way through yet but I will! Your posts are always entertaining! I am in love with Dean Winchester! The hubby understands though so it’s cool, hahaha. Thanks for stopping by today!
I love decorating for the holidays, and I find that using what you HAVE is the key to staying in budget. Of course I always pick up a few things after the holidays are over and everyone goes on sale for next year!
I absolutely love the Ho Ho Ho Trio and that set of deer stocking holders is adorable — it only I had a mantle! My daughter and I like to cut out paper snowflakes to use as decorations.. there are so many possibilities!
I said I was going to try the strawbeerries myself this year but I got lazy at the last min and ordered some I am going to give it a try. Love the decor

I love decorating with fresh flowers and greenery. My favorite decoration we have ever had was a magnolia leaf wreath with citrus fruit, it smelt heavenly. Great tips.
What fun ideas! I absolutely LOVE red and white roses together for Christmas. Beautiful!
Those stocking holders are so cute and elegant. We had to purchase a new one this year to accommodate our little one’s stocking — he’s due December 20. I also love those personalized stockings!
I love decorating for the holidays. My daughter just said how surprised that the house wasn’t all done up yet. I am a little behind this year. 😉
The decorating tips you listed here are good for decorating all year long.
Your idea of using what you already have is so good, and I really like using fresh flowers and greens, etc.
Thanks for the tips! I’m loving those stocking holders!
Oh I love the flowers so much!
These are great suggestions and I’ll look into them for the holiday season.
